I am a 54 year old Humanities professor with a Ph.D. in Philosophy. I was too young to really appreciate Benny when he was alive, but I did enjoy his show and specials in the late 50's through the 60's. I hadn't really thought too much about him until recently picking up the 40 show Best of Benny DVD. I sat down to see how the shows held up and I was amazed at the world it recreated. It was so much richer, deeper, and funnier than I remembered. I think his show may have been the funniest thing on 1950's American television. Thanks for this great site keeping this rich and funny world alive.

We desperately need Jack Benny today! Modern comics are good for what they do, but they seem to lack the innosence that Jack Benny brought to the table. As an artist, musician, actor and teacher, I have tried with some degree of success to bring the sentimentality and class of great artists like Mr Benny to my own work, with varying success. I would love to have some concrete comments from those who know his material better than I to help me in this venture. Incidentially, I turned 39 on my last birthday. My mother asked what I wanted to do for my 40th. I told her "I'm not going to have one. I'm 39 and holding!"

I was fortunate to be invited to be one of five singers who attended what would have been Jack Benny's 100th birthday on February 14, 1994 in Chicago at the Chicago Cultural Arts Center. Together we sang "Love in Bloom." Jack's daughter was in attendance, along with many other family members and friends. There were some very talented actors who impersonated Jack, Rockchester, Phil Harris, etc. who did a radio show re-inactment. Somehow Chuck Shadden was involved in orchestrating this event. Somewhere at home I have a tape of the event and I will be looking for it tonight!

Always been a Jack Benny fan ever since I was a little kid; WLOB 96.3 FM Portland, Maine has a Sunday night radio show where they air "When Radio Was", and they often feature Jack Benny (although I have to admit, I liked it better when WLOB did their own thing with the old radio shows...7:00 was always reserved for Jack Benny).  As an aside, 99.3 WBQQ in Kennebunk has a Classic Jazz show every Saturday evening, and I sometimes request "Waiting for Jane" by Eddie Anderson from 1940.  He sings very well, and it's one of my favorite jazz songs.  I'm trying to find out more about the song, but haven't had much success yet.

Glad I found the site. I have been a fan of Jack and the gang since 1952 when my dad gave me a radio that looked like a small leather suit case. It had shortwave freq's and a world map in the pull down front that exposed the dial and the many knobs and a row of buttons. When the sun went down I would clamp the antenna wire for the short wave to my metal bed frame and the world was mine to explore. I still explore the radio waves as a "HAM" radio operator. The timing! The very very clever self depreciation. The class. I feel that the comedians of today have lost the pure art of comedy. Jack Beeny never shocked - he never needed to. He had heart. What a run!  A network star for over 30 years.  As long or longer than Berle, Hope, or even Carson!  The radio show is still hip today.  It must have been one of the first "backstage" formats ever.  Decades before The Larry Sanders Show anyway.  The genius of Benny was building a character so familiar that silence could be the punch line.  The audience knew what the Benny character (and it was a brilliantly crafted character) was thinking.  What a treasure.

My sister, Sue. Sue? Si!)...anyway...I found out about this website from the commentary trak on "Charley's Aunt"...and greetings to you all.  Richard  Dodge

As a young boy I can still rember in vivid detail sitting with my family on Sunday evening with the big radio listening to Jack Benny. I sat at my leaf folding desk often asking my mother to comment on a skit that I particularly enjoyed. even to today, as a 62 year old retiree, when I face a decision i sometimes say: "Now what would Jack benny do in this situation?" Or I will sometimes say when some nefangled gadget comes around: " Now Jack you never even knew that these things would exist, and neither would I. Thanks for the chance to comment.

When I was young, very, very young I listened to Jack Benny on the radio; I laughed uncontrollably when Jack and Fred Allen exchanged visits.  I was hysterical when Jack visited his vault on the radio, it wasn't nearly as good when he did it on television.  Jack, Mary, Rochester, Phil, Dennis, everybody else.  Those days of radio and television were funny actors being sillier than could be imagined and the writers many went on to write classic movies.  It was a time when intelligence was cherished and very little of modern works is remotely rememberable.

I am a recent fan of Jack Benny.  My grandmother grew up listening to him and since, has loaned me a few CD's she has from his radio days.  I am intrigued and fascinated by the Old Classic Hollywood era and pleased to be exposed to such a talented and funny man!

The Horn Blows at Midnight remains a pleasant memory of childhood, for I was about 10 years old when I saw it. The scenes of Angel Benny being paged from a heavenly audience, watching him read instructions while coming down to earth in an elevator, and the final chase on an electric coffee sign, delighted my little active mind.
Dear Fellow Jack Benny fans,
I have a dilemma now that I am retired and eager to relive pleasant memories:
Should I rent The Horn Blows at Midnight, or will a lifetime of experiences have changed me, so that the thrill will be gone, ruining the memory?

He and Rochester gave me such bellyache laughs, brightening my school days in China and later young married life in Chicago! I am overwhelmed by your video library and very tempted to get everything in it! How many DVD's will that taked? I am leaving for a month to China to visit family and look forward to getting in touch after I return end of May. Several of my children live in Piedmont and I am always in the neighborhood. Maybe we can have lunch and strategize the 39cent commemorative stamp campaign and Dr. Crane is your perfect chairman! Again, thank you for your gift to all of us fans. Lili Lim

I just recently found this website, as I was looking at an item that may be of interest to Jack Benny fans.  After my father passed away in 1996 and soon after I put some of his memorbilia into a framed picture.  One of his prized possessions was a check from Jack Benny dated October 23, 1961 drawn on the Beverly Hills branch of the United California Bank for 39 cents!  Of course my dad never cashed this and showed it to many people over the years.  I was always under the assumption that my father received this as a celebration of Jack Benny's birthday, but the date does not coincide with either Mr. Benny's or my father's actual birth date.  It was obviously some kind of promotion and was treasured by my dad to have a check with both his name and Jack Benny's signature.  It is currently hanging proudly in my office.  If anyone can share details of why a check like this was sent out, I would appreciate the story!

I have heard of Jack Benny all my life. I finally bought some of his radio programs and have really enjoyed them. He and his guests are very funny. The commercials that they do are also very relavent for the time and in hind-sight.

I HAVE THOUSANDS OF SHOWS IN MY COLLECTION. I WAS INTRODUCED TO THE JOY OF OTR BY MY 7th GRADE ENGLISH TEACHER WHO PLAYED SHOWS IN CLASS FROM TIME TO TIME. I STILL REMEMBER THE EXACT EPISODES HE PLAYED. (I NOW HAVE MY OWN COPIES OF THEM.)THIS WAS 1974 AND MY COLLECTION HAS GROWN TO A SUBSTANTIAL SIZE SINCE. MOST OF MY SHOWS ARE ON CASSETTE. I RECENTLY STARTED AM mP3 COLLECTION OF OTR AND AM AMAZED AND DELIGHTED HOW MANY "LOST" BROADCASTS ARE STARTING TO SURFACE. JACK BENNY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. TONIGHT I REWATCHED HIS 1965 SPECIAL WITH ELKE SOMMER AND THE BEACH BOYS. WHAT A FUN SHOW! BOB HOPE WAS ALSO ON HAND TO ADD TO THE MAYHEM. ON A 1960s HOPE SPECIAL WITH JACK AS GUEST,HE APPEARS AS "DR.KUBELSKY" IN A SKIT. VERY CLEVER. I REMEMBER WHEN JACK DIED. I WAS JUST GETTING INTERESTED IN OTR AND HAD ONLY A FEW SHOWS. I KNEW AN AMERICAN ICON AND AN ERA HAD STARTED TO END. IN 1977 CBS RERAN 4 OF JACK'S SHOWS FROM THE '60's AND GAVE THEM LOTS OF PROMOTION. OUR LOCAL CBS STATION PRE-EMPTED 3 OF THEM. THAT WAS OVER 30 YEARS AGO,AND I STILL FIND IT PRETTY COLD AND HEARTLESS. IT WAS A REAL SLAP-IN-THE-FACE TO JACK AND THE LOVE AND JOY HE GAVE US ALL FOR SO VERY LONG. WE STILL LOVE YOU,JACK AND WILL NEVER LET YOUR MEMORY DIE!!!  ADAM

I have loved Jack Benny as long as I can remember.  I used to enjoy watching him on tv (dating myself) and of course his wonderful specials.  I mourned the day he left us on Dec 26, 1974.  I remember it well.  I have always kept a journal, my career is as an historian so I have always been a observer of history. I always like to document it as well.....I wrote in my journal on the 27th of Dec 1974 ..."Jack Benny passed away last night...He was a great entertainer and I have enjoyed him, and will miss him. Part of us died last night, and while we will always laugh again, we will never laugh quite so well."  With the invent of youtube I have seen Jack Benny again and sat and cried...I had forgotten how funny comedy used to be.     Glad to offer my thoughts to you folks at the Jack Benny Fan Club....Warm regards   Jack Stanley

Back in 1994 I had the unique priviledge of singing for what would have been Jack Benny's 100th birthday at The Chicago Cultural Center. The party was hosted by the Chuck Shaden oldtime radio show. Me and 4 friends from St. Eugene's parish were invited on center stage to sing "Love In Bloom." Jack Benny's daughter was present(flew in from California), among other family members. I have always loved Jack Benny including the times he would work his sponsers into the show ,even those later Texaco commericals with him pulling into a filling station and asking for "one gallon please" My uncle Hymie Shertzer who was with the Benny Goodman band guested on Jack's show in 1943 for Post Grape Nut Flakes, even though my uncle played lead alto sax for Goodman he doubled for Jack in an espiode where Jack was going to play Carnige Hall, my uncle Hy was the 1st of Goodman's musicans to walk on the stage at Carnige Hall in the 1st ever jazz concert there on JAN 18th ,1938. A funny thing has led me here, approx. 5 years ago I bought some items @ a garage sale, amongst the various items I found a picture of two men,two women sitting down at what appears to be a nice supper club, but who are they? I kept the picture stored away because I wanted to do some research on the photo, I just had a feeling these people might be famous. 2 days ago I finally began researching the picture and it turns out it is Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Don Wilson and a blonde woman who I havent identified yet. I'm learning alot about this era and find it fascinating and fun!

I'm happy to have found a site and people who share a love for old time radio and in my opinion the best all around comedian to ever hit stage screen, or radio. His sharp editorial eye for humor (although some say he had no sense of humor, he just thought everything was funny) and almost unwavering desire to bring a clean comedy show is something that lacks exceedingly today. Recently at the venerable classic Radio Recorders studio here in Hollywood, I came a crossed Mr.Bennys signature from one of the many times he recorded at this studio...A while ago. He was back in that studio for that moment. It made me feel strange but... good also.  And that's not the first time I met him in a off beat place. How about the top of Mt.Lee where he was transmitting some broadcast for the War or At Harrah's club Tahoe where he gave me gracious permission to photograph him on stage for a new entertaiment magazine published by Hugh Hefner. He was a very sweet genuine fellow. It's great when we "Meet" occasionally like that. But then a lot of that occurs in this town...Until next time Mr.B

I'm 63 years old and have been a Jack Benny since his radio days on Sunday Nights at 7PM brought to by Jello.  I of course watched his transition to early television and loved them equally as well.  I have his radio shows on tape and listen to them every so often on a Sucay Night at 7.  They still crack me up!!!  When he was sick and dying, I sent a letter to his family just to thank him for all the laughter and good feelings that he gave to me over the years.  Several months after his death and funeral I received a notecard from his family thanking me for my remembrance of him.  Quite a gesture from his family.  I don't analyze who or what makes me laugh, I just know that he did and still does.  Thanks, Jack.

For years, I've been telling people about a '70s special titled "Jack Benny's First Farewell Special," and people either can't remember it or just don't believe me. The premise was that guest stars would come on and wish Jack a happy retirement, to which he would complain, "No, you don't understand! This is my *first* farewell special. Then I'll do a 'second' farewell special, a 'third,' and so on." Finally, the show ended with then-Governor Ronald Reagan coming on to wish Jack farewell. As Jack starts to explain the mistake to Reagan, Reagan unveils a Cadillac filled with dollar bills as his farewell gift to Jack. The special ends with the credits rolling and Jack staring at the car, wondering if he should tell the truth to Gov. Reagan or not.
All this is by way of saying what an indelible image Jack Benny created over four decades in entertainment. I still love the man and wish his reruns were broadcast more often. Thank you for this wonderful site.

I was telling everybody that if it weren't for Jack Benny we probably wouldn't be serving Jello right now. (His show sponsored Jello in the early 1930s and made it kind of popular. It's in the book he and his daughter wrote -- which, by the way, I enjoyed very much.)

I was born on the day of Mr. Benny's first TV special and have been a fan ever since. I was very fortunate to watch and enjoy the latter years of his TV career and the guest spots he would appear on, especially the Tonight Show with Carson. Every chance I get, I listen to his radio programs on satellite radio and CD. My favorite moments are with him and Bob Hope, what a combo !! Thanks for providing details on his wonderful life, talented work and endless kindness.

When I was a child,I remember looking over at my father's face during several of Jack Benny's performances and watching it melt from a curmudgeonly, stressful, expression into uproarious laughter without skipping a beat. Jack Benny didn't have to say a thing. He was the king.

I enjoyed Jack Benny on Radio and TV as a kid and I saw the Eddie Carroll show (Laughter in Bloom) last night at the Schauer Arts and Activitiy Center, Hartford, Wisconsin  Sept 23, 2006.  It was a most memorable evening of reminiscing and laughter, he did an excellent job of entertaining and relating Jack Benny's life from the early days and throughout his life and career like an autobiography--Jan

I read any book I can find about Jack benny. He was extremely generous but didn't advertise his giving like today's stars. He never expected preferential treatent at restaurants. He visited soldiers in the hospital in WW II and wrote down the address or phone number of the soldier. He then contacted the parents personally to comfort them. I recently bought a CD off of ebay with commercials sung by the Sportsmen. The most entertaining $4 I've ever spent.

I've just discovered the voices of Jack Benny, Dennis Day, Don Wilson, And Rochester. I'm hooked. I'm a paper carrier and I discovered Jack courtesy of a college radio station Saturday/Early sunday morning on KRVM Eugene, Oregon. Ever since I've searched the web to learn all I can about the entire cast. I'm glad that some stations still have the decency to keep the classics around. Anyway just wanted to say I am so glad to have found a comedian I actually like.

My great grandfather Phillip Dahlberg (aka Ole) performed in the pit orchestra (drums)with Jack Benny when Jack was a teen at the Barrister Theatre.  Jack filled in for Ole at the Rex theater in Racine when Jack was a teen and before he went on vaudeville tour.  Other celebs that came to perform at the Barrister: Five Keatons (Buster) and the Marx brothers.

My father Frank G.Wallin when he was very young would play ball with Jack Benny.  The kids would take his bicycle and hide it.  One of the boys would go over to his house and tell his family that they would show him where they found the bike.  He got to go and sometimes that would get him out of practicing the violin and other things.  I do not imagine that they could have used that one very often.  This testimony came from an interview with my Father from Ruth Brown and I cannot release it without her permission.

I have noticed that several folks leaving messages here are listening to Jack's shows on XM radio. XM is great, isn't it! There is one thing missing from XM's line-up, however. As of yet (Jan 1, '06) XM does not play any of Gisele MacKenzie's songs. As most of those who are familiar with Jack's shows are aware, Gisele was a protege of Jack, and played the violin with him and sang on some of his shows. Please help to keep Gisele's memory alive. Please email either Channel 4 or Channel 73 and ask them to play some of Gisele's songs. Channel 4's email address is: savoyexpress@xmradio.com

Jack Benny was and still is one of the class acts of our time!  He could take the simplist of situations and turn it into a hilarious routine.  You almost couldn't wait for his inevitable sigh of indignation...and the uttering of "well".  The sashaying walk, the crossed arms, the hand on his chin, are all forever etched into my memory.  The Horn Blows at Midnight for you Jack and forever in our hearts.

I was a kiddo growing up in the 50s in El Paso. My fondest memories were being gathererd around the old black and white TV set watching Mr. Benny. Those were nights where our family all congregated in the living room, with no worries, no distractions and just good old laughter. I wish Mr. Benny was still doing his show, I'd be watching.

My Uncle, Frankie Remely, played guitar (left handed) in Phil Harris"s band. Frankie was always cast as "the bad boy" in the band and had an infectuous laugh which I could aways hear when I listened to the Jack Benny Radio Show. I grew up in Minneapolis, MN and when Jack Benny came on tour and played at the Orpheum Theater Jack Benny, Phil Harris and Frankie came out to my Grandmothers farm in Edina, MN for dinner. I was about 10 years old and I remember that Mr. Benny was just a "regular guy" and fit right in with all of our family. What a memorable evening!! As an impressionable seven year old I was fortunate enough to have appeared with Jack on his 'Shower of Stars' in the mid-fifties. He was patient, indulgent, and adorable and after rehearsal bought me an Eskimo Pie from the commissary at CBS. Born in 1950, I grew up watching Jack Benny on television and thinking about how good he must have been on radio. When I was about thirteen, I saw him perform live on Broadway and waited patiently outside of the stage door to get an autograph. I remember him as a very gracious man, willing to sign autographs. He was also very well-preserved and he wore a very elegant overcoat. There is something reassuring about his comedy. I admire in particular the way in which he moved between a variety and a situation comedy format on his show. It's too bad that no one has written a book about him recently, one that used whatever archival sources exist.

Dear International Jack Benny Fan Club: I was in Mr. Benny's home South of Sunset Blvd. as a Bel-Air Patrol - Alarm Installer and Maintenance Man. I was there 3 days after Mr. Benny passed from this world. The mirrors were covered in his earthly home. This is a Jewish Tradition in a house of mourning. In the next room, across from the reception room which I could see from the foyer when on a maintenance call there, I could see that Mr. Benny's surviving family and maybe a friend or two were sitting Shiva. They were talking of their loss. I let my Christian partner know what was happening and asked the family's man who greeted us if it would not be better to return later in consideration for the family. It was a most solemn time. My partner and I talked of Mr. Benny and his comedy while driving to the next service location. We talked of Mr. Rodchester, Mr. Benny's closet friend and confidant. All we have now are memories of Mr. Benny. Thank You Jack Benny Fan Club,
Sincerely,
Mister Michael S Jeffers Esquire

Hello fans of Jack Benny! I'm the manager of a community radio station in Seaside Florida, made famous by Jim Carrey in the movie The Truman Show. I am airing the Jack Benny Show every "Sunday Night at 7" (central time zone). You can hear it on your computer at my web site. http://www.30aradio.org/  We are named after Scenic Highway 30-A in NW Florida. I think you will enjoy the broadcast if you tune in. Tonight I'm airing two excerpts from shows he did during World War Two from military bases. Also tonight for the 4th of July holiday, you can hear a Bob Hope Show at the San Diego Navy Base with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans! This is radio worth listening to. I grew up loving these stars who were the greatest entertainers of our time. I hope some of you will become regular listeners to the show at its old air time of Sunday Night at 7pm. If any of you know someone who would like to advertise on the web site, please have them get in touch. Tell Jim Carrey to call me! (I Wish). But I do it because I LOVE radio and Jack Benny is one who made it special.

By portraying a petulant "everyman", Jack Benny helped us to laugh at our own shortcomings.  He was actually kind, generous to charities, and thoughtful to his fans.  I have e-mailed you the familiar publicity shot he autographed for me when I was just a kid.  Although it's a 1960 photo, I got it in l971.  He only lived three more years.  I still miss him.
